I love this piece! I think the face, its color, strength and general representation, is perfect. I love the image of Obama leaving the doors of the White House, ready to act. I read an article today about a woman who voted early and shortly after broke down with tears of joy because she never thought that in her life time she could vote for an African American man. Obama is most definately a hero and I will hang this poster next to my velvet Kennedy painting.

jasonb, I'm confused as to your comment... It seems to me that most of the comments for this piece are very positive and it's one of the highest scored, so why do you think people don't like it?! I think there's a rather pathetic attempt by some to move pieces they like up on the rating scale by purposefully (& sadly) rating others much lower than they deserve. This should not be a competition- I thought it was about seeing some great art, sharing with each other a communal experience, and supporting the ideal of change. Criticizing others to bolster oneself (or one's friends) seems rather antithetical to this whole concept. That being said, I hope this "Man of Hope" avoids the Republican kryptonite until election day & soars strongly for the next eight years!

By the way, just to clarify as this is an "open forum", I certainly don't see my piece as one of the finest on this site.
I have been very proud of the hugely positive response to the piece, both in its extraordinary number of views as well as it high ratings. As I mentioned when I submitted, I am by no means a professional- I am simply a middle school teacher who was inspired back to my drawing table after somewhat of a hiatus by Obama's message of hope & change- so the positivity I have seen & read in reaction to my art has been a really great feeling. That being said, I believe strongly that someone, or a group of folks, are subverting the scoring process. I do not make this accustation lightly but every time my piece goes up in the ratings, surpassing a certain other piece (which I will not mention because I do not think the artist is involved in this sad activity & I actually like the piece in & of itself), I somehow receive a barrage of ratings of one's until my piece is again below this other work. From what I can see, the same has occurred with other pieces as well. For example, "Words Matter" by Larry Roibal (which I believe is one of the finest pieces on the site & worlds apart in quality from my own) seems to fall victim to the same shenanigans. He's even shared his similar thoughts on same in his comments section.
I am not for my work looking to be the highest rated piece nor do I believe I should be- it is flattering that people are responding to my piece at all, but I do think that the assessments (& the subsequent scoring) should be fair & honest, should be about the work's quality & should certainly not be done with an agenda, whether it be out of one individual's intense dislike for a certain piece (& thereby voting numerous times under various psuedonyms perhaps?) or worse yet, scoring one piece lower to allow another to rise (this, I believe, is reprehensible).
Again, I truly appreciate what this site is all about & I am so honored by the humungous positive response my work has received, & a little over a week away from this historic & inspirational election, I hate to bring up what seems like perhaps a trivial matter.
But I feel strongly that a few unfortunately sad & desperately competitive people are subverting the process for the rest of us who just want to share our art & perhaps even allow that work to be inspirational to others.
Again I certainly do not want to be the highest scored nor do I have a need to be, but I do want to know that the ratings I receive are honest & a true assessment of my work. If I can be assured of that, I will accept all the one's you can throw at me. I won't be thrilled but I will at least know that they're honest...

This site brings a great amount of needed joy to my day but the ugly comments for this lovely submission are very sad.
I'm a public interest attorney in housing law. I represent people who are impoverished and cannot afford an attorney. During normal times, my day is filled with people who are struggling with poverty, illness, families, addiction, etc. Over recent months with the housing crash and the collapse of our economy, the amount of pain that I witness in a day has increased. I need sites like this one to renew my hope. Yet, I see pettiness here. Submissions that I love seem to bounce up and down from day to day. People supporting Nuestra Voz, a fine submission, seem to be attacking other pieces. And this leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and terribly confused.
We are in a moment in time when we have an opportunity to come together and support one another. People connected to this site have so much in common, they are artists, committed to change in government, and like me lovers of art and community activists. I wish people could understand the opportunity they have here and rise to the occassion.
There is nothing wrong with not liking a piece. There is nothing wrong with expressing your opinion, but do it appropriately. Give an honest assessment and constructive criticism. This helps grow the community while comments from the likes of "YouSuck" destroy the community and spirit of this site.
I imagine that it is very difficult for artists to make their work public. There must be some anxiety to it, fear, etc. as your work must be very emotional for you. I liken it to the courage it takes to go before a judge and jury. You should consider this vulnerability before leaving such unnecessary and peddy comments.
I like this piece very much and it does not deserve such negativity. No one on this site does.

I agree. This is a very nicely done piece, certainly undeserving of such harshness, no matter what the origin but especially if it is dishonest. "Man of Hope" is fun and innocent and stands out as one of the few truly hand-drawn submissions here. For that alone it deserves some kudos (or as the kids say these days, "props").

This is an excellent piece in form and content. Hand drawn, i love the detail of the white house, and without any text, the message is soley expressed by the picture. I love the idea of a black superman swooping out of the white house. The symbolism may seem tame currently and in NE US, but put in the context of historical criticism this represents a clearly positive change. Great work.
